About the Property: The Alder Stream (Atkinson) area has long been an area considered rich in wetland conservation values. FSM holds and oversees three conservation easements in this area: Piscataquis River (2012), Alder Stream (2013), W. Branch of the Dead Stream (2016). All are owned by Northeast Wilderness Trust. The projects were completed as a result of generous grant support from Sweet Water Trust.
These conservation easements are designed to conserve significant natural and scenic values that reflect the rural character of the surrounding towns and will prevent habitat fragmentation and loss in this area. The parcels contain forest, meadow, and wetland habitat, including frontage along the Piscataquis River and its tributary, Alder Stream. The Piscataquis River–Alder Stream wetland complex is recognized at both state and federal levels for its ecological significance to at-risk plant and animal species.
